Teams Prepare For Desert Endurance Marathon

Teams throughout the Gulf and internationally are now in training for the most grueling race ever to be staged in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Desert Endurance Marathon is the first event of the World Peace Games being held in Dubai from March 19 to April 18 1998.

The four person team event takes place from March 20-24 on a course of almost 200 kilometers set by ex-members of the British Special Air Services (S.A.S). Competitors will have their eyes set firmly on winning the 1-kg of gold being presented by the Dubai Government.

The route - on foot and mountain bike-takes competitors through some of the Middle East's most dramatic landscape, starting on the beaches, through the hinterland, sand dunes ,gravel plain and into the spectacular wadis and mountains.

After an arduous day's physical activity, teams from Honk Kong, Australia, Scotland, England, Jordan, Bahrain, France, Germany, U.S.A., and the United Arab Emirates will have to complete mental agility tests at the overnight bivouac sites.

The unique nature of the race has generated local and international media attention and prompted the BBC to cover the event with news film due to be broadcast to 50 million homes in 180 countries around the world and to reach more than 100 million listeners on the BBC World Service Radio.
